Under the administration of Mayor John F. Street, the City of Philadelphia Department of Commerce International Division has focused on making Philadelphia stand out as an international city. Therefore, I am pleased to submit an article sharing information on our services. As trade is an important engine of economic growth it is a major emphasis of our work, enabling us to retain and create new jobs in Philadelphia.
Over the years, the International Division has worked with the Mayor's Commission on Technology, Wireless Philadelphia, and Innovation Philadelphia to represent the City of Philadelphia with inbound and outbound delegations. As technology is one of our major sectors, we aggressively seek to promote firms in this industry; as well as promote Philadelphia as a great place to do business to technology firms seeking to expand in the US. A number of countries from Central and South America, Africa, Asia to name a few, have contacted our office in identifying technology firms to do business. Because of the numerous Russian technology firms visiting Philadelphia, we have even proclaimed a Russian Technology Week that is held bi-annually.
The International Division's mission is to help the businesses gain access to the international network, strengthen their linkages to the global arena, and educate them on global best practices, while promoting key sectors, such as technology and attracting investment to the Region. Moreover, we provide free export consulting services to companies seeking to expand into overseas markets. Such services includes: identifying trade leads, best markets, new buyers, investment opportunities, trade financing, and technical assistance. Last year, we assisted in helping to generate $56,132,904,009 in imports and $13,070,361,811 in exports for Philadelphia. It is important to mention that the services of our office are enhanced through a number of partnerships, including other governmental export providers, business chambers, business councils, and trade offices.
In today's global economy, international competitiveness is less an option and more a necessity. It is important for businesses to understand that it is much simpler to get involved in the global market today, than it was years ago. Hence, all businesses, small, medium and large, ought to think global. They need to pursue international opportunities, and within the International Division, it is our job to make sure businesses understand that all levels of government are there to assist them.
Everyone has an opportunity to win in the global marketplace!
